British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
