A local mother and her partner were given devastating information in 2018 when their young son their child was found to have a rare type of leukaemia.

Two years of intensive medical care followed, comprising drug treatments, radiation therapy, and immune system treatments before a stem cell transplant. The young boy, at three years old, made a “miraculous recovery” from the surgery, with medical staff announcing the cancer in recovery.

During this period that the mother, aged thirty-six, began seeking answers. She could not stop thinking about observations made by hospital staff at the time of her son’s diagnosis. “It keeps us up at night wondering how Fraser got his illness,” a doctor had shared with her.

“We're constantly wondering wondering how our son got his illness,” a doctor had told her.

Past Events

The botched disposal of vast quantities of toxic materials after the shutdown of a major industrial facility in this community in 1979 had “widely acknowledged,” said the mother. A court ruling connected the local authority's mismanagement of the site to a series of congenital abnormalities in town residents during the twentieth century.

Over time, Alison started to connect the situation to her own. “[The disease] is not inherited,” she stated. “What could cause this? … It’s got to be down to the community. All these kids [with] the disease.

“Everybody in this town knows somebody who’s got a youngster [with] cancer. That’s not normal.”

Collective Efforts

The parents started to connect with more parents in Corby with similar stories – featuring some of Alison's past schoolmates at a local school – and the group began gathering thorough information on those affected. They now lead a movement supporting about numerous households with situations of pediatric illness going back to 1988.

The organization has been pressuring the municipal government to investigate any connections between instances of childhood cancer in this community and the closure of the facility. Soon, medical experts are expected to release their analysis of whether the area has had a disproportionate number of occurrences of youth disease for its population of the local community.

“All we want is to try and protect future people so they can avoid the pain that we've experienced,” said Alison.

Legal Precedents

The decision in the 2009 civil claim recognized that, between a fourteen-year period, vast quantities of hazardous waste from the steel plant were transported “regularly” from the southern part of town to a designated site in the northern section – with “significant amounts” of hazardous materials moved and dropped on community streets and “substantial quantities” of airborne particles generated by the remediation.

Nonetheless, it also cited documents from the Environment Agency in 1997 that discovered accumulations of toxic substances that had been abandoned at Deene Quarry were later taken away in “significant amounts”.

Growing Suspicions

Alison believes toxic substances was not only dumped at the main disposal area but in different locations of the municipality. Lately, she approved a “important advancement” after local authorities said it would analyze land that could be tainted and study where hazardous materials was deposited.

Gaffney said council staff confirmed in the discussion that they lacked information where the locations of contaminated waste could be. “They said: ‘We lack information where these areas are. Documentation is missing, we possess no information.’”

Community Support

The government declaration was also welcomed by another parent, a pastoral lead at a local school, whose young child, Bella, was found to have leukaemia in the summer.

“I needed to cut my nine-year-old daughter's head because her tresses was coming out from the treatments she had to administer to eliminate her disease. So actually it’s in everyone's benefit, it’s in the child's wellbeing [for the council] to reveal that information,” she said.

“Numerous people in the area that have been found to have youth disease and I just feel it’s impossible to overlook – it requires investigation. This can’t be normal.”

Personal Stories

Meg Lyons, in her early thirties, who has a professional career and now lives in London, said parents earned “full transparency and transparency” from the council.

Her young sibling, Eve, died on in recent years after being confirmed to have a uncommon malignancy at the young age. Eve, who raised awareness for medical research, was “one of the most adorable, entertaining and kindest” individuals, the sister recalled.

Her family member recollects the effect of the cessation of the manufacturing site on the community, the woman explained. “She said you could not position your palm in ahead of you because [of] the colored dust.”

“These issues have continued since I was approximately about my youth. It's too long and it is negligence toward the community members.”

Past Associations

A relative, Maggie Mahon, was among numerous families connected to the legal case against the then Corby council after her newborn was had a congenital issue. Her spouse, the man, was among the truck operators involved in removing waste from the industrial site. Their situation was portrayed in a television program, and showed Maggie cleaning the debris from her husband’s jeans.

Gaffney said the collective has been reached out to by informants who were responsible for the placement of substances in the community.
