Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Fans
The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty manageable for the billionaire owner.
Offseason Issues and Media Spotlight
The incident comes after a contentious offseason for Jones, who faced significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key defensive player Parsons to the Packers.
Moreover, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that explored his influence in building the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, despite its recent championship drought.
The NFL’s action to penalize Jones highlights its continuing initiative to maintain proper behavior among all franchise representatives, regardless of their position or financial standing.
