Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced anger after the ex-president alleged a group of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Recording That Provoked the Dispute
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who in the past served in armed forces or intelligence capacities.
"Similar to us, you all swore an pledge to safeguard and support this national charter," the lawmakers affirmed in the brief video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our regulations are explicit, you can decline illegal orders, you can decline unlawful commands, you should reject improper directives. No one has to execute directives that break the legal system or our founding principles."
The Former President's Furious Reply
The video message appeared to prompt a angry reply from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he declared: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our Nation. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a combined declaration condemning the statements.
"Violent politics has no position in the United States," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our nation with tremendous patriotism and honor. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous threats of violence against congressional representatives, and urge Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with protective services "to make certain the protection of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these unhinged digital publications and recant his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the announcement stated.
Lawmakers' Defiant Reaction
The representatives who were featured in the video also published a response.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and national security professionals who love this country and made an pledge to protect and support the national charter of the United States," they stated. "This commitment is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the former president views it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their protection as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and censure the former president's demands for our death and political violence. This is a period for moral clarity."
Further Political Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's remarks and published on online networks: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of elected officials."
He continued: "This represents an outright THREAT. All senators, all representatives, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "treason", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This constitutes very risky, you have important representatives of the government telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that's without precedent in the nation's past."
The GOP official also according to sources told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the wording and establish all that."
White House Reaction
During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "No."
"It's important to note about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson said. "There are active officials of the federal government who worked together to arrange a digital communication to individuals of the US military, to active duty service members urging them to ignore the executive's proper directives."
She added: "The purity of our armed forces relies on the chain of command, and if that system is violated, it can result in casualties, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
