Harsh Winter Weather Systems Take Five Victims in Gaza Amidst Desperate Conditions in Temporary Shelters.

Powerful cold-season winds brought walls down onto flimsy shelters housing people displaced by conflict in Gaza, killing no fewer than four people. These deaths highlights the dangerous situation that continue after more than 24 months of intense airstrikes and severe lack of humanitarian assistance.

Ceasefire Offers Little Relief from Severe Weather

Although a truce has been active since last fall, humanitarian organizations report that Palestinians broadly lack the adequate housing required to survive recurring winter storms.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which received the bodies, reported on this week that the dead include a pair of adult females, a young female, and a man.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry stated on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy succumbed of hypothermia overnight.

"The world has enabled us to witness death in all its forms," said Bassel Hamouda after the burial. "It’s true the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Tent Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, three members of a single family — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed on top of their dwelling in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than five others were hurt in the incident.

Their relatives on Tuesday started removing the debris that had buried their family and rebuilding the tent shelters for survivors.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Emergency

The UN and its humanitarian partners were distributing tents, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothes as well as nutrition and hygiene items across Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of the population reside in improvised shelters because their homes were turned into ruins over the course of the war. Aid groups contend not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza during the truce.

Casualty Numbers Since the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government, says over four hundred and forty individuals have been fatally shot by gunfire and their remains brought to hospitals since the ceasefire began. The ministry keeps detailed fatality data that are considered largely accurate by international bodies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, said on that day that at least 100 children below eighteen years old – sixty males and forty girls – had been lost their lives since the truce began because of armed actions, such as drone strikes, air raids, tank shelling and employment of live ammunition. These numbers, he explained, reflected incidents where sufficient information had been compiled to warrant documentation, but the total toll is expected to be higher. He added that many hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"While 'bombings and shootings have slowed' under the truce, they have not ceased," Elder informed journalists at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "So what the international community now calls calm would be considered a crisis anywhere else," he said.

Another Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of more than two million individuals has been fighting to keep the cold weather and storms at bay while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a absence of more substantial temporary housing, which is badly needed during the winter months. It’s the 3rd cold season since the war between Israel and the group began on 7 October 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and killed approximately 1,200 individuals and took hostage 251 others into Gaza.

The local health authority reports over seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
