A artificial intelligence firm based in the UK has won in a significant high court proceeding that addressed the legality of machine learning systems using extensive amounts of copyrighted material without permission.

Stability AI, whose leadership includes Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Cameron, effectively defended against allegations from Getty Images that it had infringed the global photo agency's intellectual property rights.

Legal experts view this ruling as a blow to rights holders' sole right to profit from their artistic output, with one prominent lawyer warning that it demonstrates "the UK's secondary IP system is not sufficiently robust to safeguard its creators."

Evidence and Trademark Issues

Judicial evidence showed that Getty's photographs were in fact employed to train the company's AI model, which allows individuals to generate images through text prompts. Nonetheless, Stability was also determined to have violated Getty's trademarks in some instances.
