A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on a Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the forty-year-old media personality was approached by three suspects, one of whom opened fire on him before fleeing on foot.

The purpose of the shooting has not been established and no one has been arrested have taken place, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Law enforcement indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a location near the city center landmark.

He had been present for hours at the site overseeing the installation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by unidentified individuals, according to reports.

"The report indicates the deceased was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," a police statement stated.

CCTV footage reportedly captured a man with dreadlocks and clad in what appeared to be a protective services outfit firing shots on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but collapsed across the street.

Police added that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the attack.

Key evidence, like cartridges, were recovered from the location.

Police have appealed members of the public who may have have information to contact them.

"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the shooting, and investigators have been following their trail to find their location," remarked an authority figure.

Family and Public Reaction

His sister, Nicole Stock, stated the family was struggling to process his death.

"I am in shock. I don't have words," were her words.

A media executive said that "DJ Warras was far beyond a face of a reality series. He was a talented storyteller, a true devotee of sound and a generous spirit who brought joy and energy to every appearance. His commitment to his craft left an profound impact."

In a release, the network he worked for declared Stock was known for his magnetism, approachability and quick humor, adding that his memory "will live on".
