Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such treatments should be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
