This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple face the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
