The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the company with Jerry Greenfield, announced how he will independently develop this new product as part of a personal collection showcasing issues the company was barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders versus Parent Company
The recent announcement intensifies the continuing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders maintain how the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen announced through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder declared in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first established in 2016 to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts and Future Intentions
The founder indicated that he plans to develop other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which the company was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years of involvement, citing concerns that the company's autonomy had been undermined following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
