The Japanese Economic Output Contracts as Exports Face Impact by American Tariffs
Japan's economy has recorded a contraction for the initial time in six quarters, largely caused by falling overseas shipments as a result of newly imposed American trade duties.
G7 Economic Standings
The Japanese economy stands as the first G7 country to announce an GDP decline in the latest three-month period.
As the United States yet to release its gross domestic product figures for Q3 2025, the current Group of Seven growth leaderboard indicate:
- The French economy: +0.5% quarterly growth
- United Kingdom: +0.1%
- Canada: +0.1% (preliminary figure)
- German economy: zero growth
- Italian economy: 0%
- Japanese economy: negative 0.4 percent
Tourism Stocks Slump during Diplomatic Rift with China
In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is facing an intensifying political dispute with China concerning Taiwan.
Shares in Japanese travel and consumer companies have dropped significantly after China urged its residents to refrain from visiting to Japan.
This action by Beijing intensified a diplomatic feud that was triggered by remarks from Tokyo's new PM about the possibility of sending forces in the event of a potential Chinese invasion on Taiwan.
The development caused a wave of sell-offs across Japanese leisure shares.
- The Tokyo Disneyland operator stock dropped by 5.7 percent
- The department store chain tumbled by 11.3 percent
- The national carrier declined by 3.75 percent
"The China-Japan tension over Taiwan and China's advisory advising against visits to Japan brings short-term difficulties for consumer-facing sectors.
"Chinese visitors account for roughly 25% of Japan's international visitors, making retail outlets, high-end shopping, and hospitality particularly at risk."
GDP Contraction Details
Japan's GDP declined by 0.4% in the July-September quarter, as industrial exports were affected by duties levied by the US recently.
Exports were a key driver of the contraction, falling by 1.2% compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a the same period last year.
Earlier this year, the American government had proposed Japan with a new 25 percent tariff on its products, which was later reduced to 15 percent when the two nations reached a trade agreement.
Private demand also declined, by 0.3% quarter-on-quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's real gross domestic product contracted by 1.8 percent in the quarter through September.
"Japan's economy was strong in the initial six months of this year and today's GDP data showed that momentum is paused for now.
I expect Japan's economy to be back on a gradual recovery trend going forward."
The White House has recently acknowledged the impact of tariffs on Americans, reducing tariffs on food imports including beef, produce, beverages and bananas amid growing concerns about rising costs.
