The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
