The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
