What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting
No fewer than 16 people perished and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.
Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She described the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
